Fabian Birgfeld
Interior Landscapes
Artist's Statement and RésuméInterior Landscapes consists of over 60 photographic triptychs taken between 1998 and now in 15 cities in over half a dozen countries. The body of work creates a survey; an encyclopedia of non-places that works out programmatic similarities and perceptual differences. The triptych underlines the cinematic quality of the spaces and reconstruct the kinetic continuum that is intrinsic to them. The unfolding of the space across the three panels of the triptych adds temporal and spatial dimensions to photography that a single image does not have. The title of the project Interior Landscapes refers to how these spaces collectively function as a network.
All prints are Silver Dye Bleach Prints (Cibachrome) mounted on di-bond or aluminum and in a limited edition. Depending on the motif, the size of the triptych is either 120” X 40”, 60" X 20", or 20" X 12".
