Greg Williamson
Hands

A person affected with the syndrome known
As Alien Hand feels “disassociated
From the hand,” which has its own will, own
Agenda, for which I endure unmitigated

Indignities—the bathing, the shaving, all manner
Of cheerless fraternizing with that dim,
Sinister “twin” I punish with a hammer—
And try—Sweet Jesus!—not to strangle him

Until one last “thumbs up,” one final “ciao,”
And free, uncuffed, sprung, manumitted (“G’day”),
I legerdemain it back to fairyland’s
Discarnate airs, sneaking a peek at how
Well he writes, down in his cozy atelier,
With that big chunk of time
                                       he’ll have on his hands.
