As Always

If I should die before I wake, I might.
The vital words are viable and spoken.
As always, you are in my prayers tonight.

The street outside my window seems too bright
sans moonlight, a reflection merely token
if I should die. Before I wake, I might

sleep restlessly without a little light
beneath the door, before you, too, are woken
as always you are – in my prayers. Tonight

the pillow in their path lies watertight,
the heart between its feathers still unbroken.
If I should die before I wake, I might:

the vital words are breathing and alright.
The vital words are viable and spoken.
As always, you are in my prayers tonight,

and I could give away the ghost, and spite
its going, knowing that your arms are open,
if I should die before I wake. I might,
as always. You are in my prayers tonight.
